Giant Stinging Tree (Dendrocnide exelsa)

A fairly large specimen (about 40m?) in Dorrigo National Park. These trees have 'hairy' leaves that can cause an extremely painful sting. Some species of Australian stinging trees are known to kill dogs, horses and even humans. The wood is soft and a large tree will entirely rot away in a year or two.

The trees in this subtropical rainforest are covered in epiphytic ferns and orchids. The park is included on the world heritage list and you can stand under the canopy after a 5 minute stroll from the carpark...
